The Logitech G9 Laser Mouse is a fully customizable wired mouse, offering modifiable sensitivity up to 3200 dpi, 1,000 reports per second over USB 2, built-in memory for custom settings and macros in five profiles with a different LED color for each, choice of two interchangeable grips, two-mode mouse wheel, and a weight slot which takes up to 28g of extra mass.
For a starter, the mouse wheel has distinct two modes: ratcheted and frictionless. Frictionless mode causes the wheel to continuously spin with even a gentle brush of the finger. This mode is intended for scrolling through long web pages, documents and lists, and works well apart from the fact it’s a little too simple to catch the wheel by accident and cause it to skip the wrong way instead. Ratchet mode causes the wheel to move one click at a time, excellent feature for use in games that draw on the wheel for weapon switching.
The G9 Laser Mouse is much less about show. Its grip is interchangeable, feels light, but it features a solid and reliable build. The shape is a surprisingly good fit, low to the mouse pad and the buttons are in the perfect spot. The low-friction feet enable the mouse to glide over flat surfaces with even a gentle touch. Unfortunately, fine grit does get between gaps in the underside of the mouse and causes it to feel crusty, though not really a big deal for most gamers.
Out of the box, this gaming mouse wears the Wide Load grip, targeted at people who like to rest their whole hand over the mouse. It has a smooth, almost clay-like texture to it, a plump palm-side stock, and a big lip for relaxing your thumb on. The Precision grip is thinner, textured slightly to prevent sweatiness, and better for fingertip control, which seems to suit the mouse just fine on my hand.
The G9 includes an onboard memory that allows you to set up to five profiles to suit your needs. By default the G9 comes with three profiles ready to use: General, Gaming, and Productivity, although you can edit or delete these as you see fit. Editing profiles require that you download the latest Logitech Setpoint software, but at least you don’t need the SetPoint software once you’ve saved the profiles to your mouse. Note, however, that some features do require that SetPoint remains running, such as keyboard macros.
